Plot: With S.H.I.E.L.D in disarray (thanks, Winter Soldier!), and Iron Man still freaking out about the repercussions of the first Avengers movie (worm hole + giant flying slug thing x invading alien army = post traumatic heebie jeebies), Tony Stark decides to take earth’s defensive strategy into his own hands - by building an artificial intelligence clever enough to save the planet, no matter the threat.
In typical Stark fashion, things go a tad awry, and he actually ends up spawning their worst nightmare - a psychotic, sarcastic daddy issue-riddled robot named Ultron who decides the best way to save the planet is to kill all the humans on it.
Throw in two new super-powered weirdos under Ultron’s sway (the brain-befuddling Scarlet Witch and cocky speedster Quicksilver), a burgeoning romance between two of the Avengers’ own, and a whole host of dissent in the ranks, and the table is set for a globe-hopping, team-imploding, super-powered blockbuster of the Whedon-ist order.
Best Scene: While the madcap, ‘they-just-did-WUT?!’ finale is up there with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s best, it’s hard to shake the spectacle of watching a mind-controlled Hulk and giganti-Iron Man battle it out in devastating, brutal form amidst the very people-strewn streets of a South African city.
Fangasm Rating: High. Very, very high. When they’re not trying to rip each other apart, Age of Ultron shows the Avengers functioning as a proper, well-oiled team, and there are countless moments that’ll have comic book (and MCU) fans squee-ing loud. Captain America and Thor’s tag-team teamwork is never less than grin-inducing, and the fight scenes are all the more spectacular because of it.
Date Movie or Mate Movie: The jaw-dropping fight scenes and Whedon witticisms are the epitome of crowd-pleasing, mate-hugging cinematic awesomeness, while the surprisingly tender romance between Black Widow and Hulk guarantees decent date movie material. Scene Stealer: It’s a tie-up between Hawkeye (and yep, we never thought we’d say that either) who has an actual character arc this time around (yippee) or the morally dubious new caped crusader, The Vision, who is guaranteed amazingness for every minute he’s on-screen.
WTF Moment: Definitely the finale, and Ultron’s, erm, ‘unique’ plan to destroy the world. To say too much is to give it away, but let’s just say ‘asteroid city’ and leave it there. Summary: Somehow, Joss Whedon has Assembled a sequel that’s as brilliant as the its predecessor, yet defiantly different in tone, plot and action. Darker, deeper, and surprisingly dramatic, it’s going to be the blockbuster to beat this summer.
