Robbers Dressed In Army Uniform Storm Bank, Kill At Least 12

Armed men dressed in army uniform stormed the First City Monument Bank in Lekki, Lagos, late in the afternoon of March 12, shooting sporadically.

According to the SaharaReporters, 12 people including four policemen have been killed following the bank robbery in Lagos. The bank is said to be located around the Lekki/Ikoyi bridge. (Scroll down for photos)

An eyewitness confirmed that a large number of armed men invaded the bank shooting sporadically.

According to The Punch, the robbers robbed a bank at Lekki phase 1 and attempted to escape through the link bridge to Ikoyi when they encountered policemen.

Reportedly, the policemen on duty in a bullion van were shot dead as commuters were scampered for safety, abandoning their vehicles. The robbers are said to have fled on a speedboat.

“Around 4.45pm, I was driving to my office in Ikoyi from Lekki but when I got a spot on the bridge, I heard sporadic gunshots. Fortunately, policemen at the tail end of the bridge inwards Ikoyi, shot back,” the eyewitness, who identified himself as Tayo, said.

“We all came out of our vehicles and laid on the floor to avoid being hit by stray bullets. At some point, some of the policemen were overwhelmed by the fire power of the robbers and had to flee. The robbers later jumped into a speed boat and escaped through the water,” he added.

Earlier the LindaIkeji blog reported that three police officers and three civilians were shot dead. A fish seller who had been shot was rushed to a hospital. Five other people who were hit by stray bullets were also hospitalised.
