DURBAN FREELANCER MAKES MTV'S “ART BEAT” FASTER…

Durban freelancer makes MTV's “Art Beat” faster…

Matt Dippenaar wins Short Video Competition!

Johannesburg, 25 September 2013: Durban freelancer Matt Dippenaar (@MattD_The1stEdn) is today celebrating his win in the MTV “Art Beat” short video competition.

The 25-year old motion designer will be seeing his own work on iconic TV channel MTV (DStv Channel 130) after triumphing in the MTV contest, which was designed to give up-and-coming South African creatives the chance to kickstart their careers in broadcast and design.

Matt’s clip, entitled ”Bursting” will be broadcast on MTV (DStv Channel 130), from 1 October, while Matt himself will enjoy a six-week internship at MTVHQ in Johannesburg, providing him with an opportunity to work and learn alongside well-known industry experts at the world famous multimedia brand.  His entry depicts a drum with the MTV logo on the face, which bursts open spewing out a kaleidoscope of colourful, organic forms.

An ecstatic Matt commented, “I am actually at a loss for words! I really can't believe it: it’s the most amazing day of my life! I won a competition for MTV and my work is actually going to be flighting on TV!  This is honestly a dream come true and such an honour!”

Matt is a graduate of Vega, the Brand Communication School based in Durban, where he specialised in Creative Brand Communications and majored in Multimedia Design under the navigation of lecturer Dean Henning.  Since graduating, Matt has subsequently pursued his  passion for broadcast and motion graphic design, having worked for a small Durban-based agency for a short while.  Matt subsequently travelled to Europe and after a lucky opportunity to animate for a company based in Austria, he decided to work freelance full time, to try and learn more, follow his passion for creating conceptual motion graphics and pushing pixels!  To view Matt’s online portfolio go towww.mattdippenaar.co.za.

Launched in July 2013, MTV Art Beat is part of the channel’s remit to uplift, nurture and empower South African creative talent.  Targeted at existing or recently graduated design students; MTV Art Beatencouraged them to push their artistic and technical limits by creating a video clip or short film that embodies and characterizes key qualities of the MTV brand.  Each entry had to include the legendaryMTV logo in some shape or form, and illustrate one of the following MTV brand values:

- Smart and Fun is the New Rock ‘n’ Roll

- Super-Now and Fast Forward

- Warm is the New Cool

- Celebrate Heroes Big and Small

The MTV Art Beat competition was open to applicants between 18-25 who are students at South African tertiary education institutions or recently graduated students in South Africa who have been working in the broadcast/content industry for less than two years.

Commented Tim Horwood, Creative Director, Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa, “Matt interpreted the brief brilliantly, creating a confident and powerful short clip that communicates the essence of MTV in just a few short seconds of video.”
